Central Asia Barometer Survey Wave 9

Countries: Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan

Research Design:  The goal of this project was to obtain a reliable reading of public opinion in several countries. The survey included questions about media usage, the political and economic situation in each country, public health, attitudes towards the government, and opinions on other countries; in addition, the questionnaire provided demographic information, such as age, education level, and employment status, among others.

Usually, the Central Asia Barometer Survey is carried out via face-to-face interviews; however, due to the lockdowns and restrictions taken by governments to limit the spread of COVID-19, both of the 2020 waves were administered via telephone interviews. Therefore, simple random sampling (SRS) of mobile phone numbers was used to obtain a nationally representative sample in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. In Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, all interviews were completed via desktop CATI applications from either in-office or at-home stations. In Uzbekistan, all interviews were completed on tablets with calls made via mobile phones from at-home stations.
